Whither Domtar? -- asset repurposing roadmap answers some questions, seems to raise others




CLOVERDALE, CA, December 13, 2018-

When Domtar bought the North American Attends business in 2011, executives began talking about building a personal care business that would ultimately generate operating profits in the range of $150 million a year. Meanwhile, since mid-2017 they have frequently discussed their ongoing study of possible ways to “repurpose” assets in the troubled white paper business, converting capacity either to paperboard or fluff pulp.

Instead, late last month they unveiled a “roadmap” for a possible 10-year white paper asset repurposing program on which CEO John Williams said they are not yet ready to “pull the trigger” because the paper market is doing so well. Meanwhile, the $1 billion personal care business they have built generated operating profits before unusual items last year of $53 million.
