Superabsorbent polymer prices are heading up and may jump in 2019 due to rising cost of caustic soda, propylene

CLOVERDALE, CA, August 16, 2018-

Superabsorbent polymer prices have been bumping along at or near an historic low for the last three years, but there is a possibility prices could jump in mature markets next year. However, that is not an indicator of a dramatic shift in demand fundamentals, coming instead from skyrocketing caustic soda costs that have been hurting SAP producers’ margins.

Adding a small wrinkle, observers say, is the fast-evolving trade war between the Trump Administration and China. One pointed out that superabsorbent polymer from China is included in “list 2” of products potentially to get hit with punitive tariffs by the United States – causing both US buyers and Chinese exporters to begin avoiding each other and look for alternate counterparties.
