International Paper to close Georgetown, SC, fluff pulp mill while a strategic review of the GCF unit intensifies

SAN FRANCISCO, November 8, 2024-

As International Paper (IP) increasingly focuses on sustainable packaging, the Memphis-headquartered firm is reviewing strategic options for its global cellulose fibers (GCF) unit and decided to permanently close its Georgetown, SC, pulp and paper mill. The closure, set to occur “in stages” through yearend, will slash IP’s fluff pulp production capacity by 300,000 tonnes/yr.

“International Paper is committed to maximizing value for our shareholders, and to that end, we have launched a comprehensive and thorough review of strategic options for our global cellulose fibers business,” said IP chmn/CEO Andy Silvernail, in a release on Oct. 31.
