The United States is the single largest importer of apparel in the world, accounting for around 19% of global imports in 2023. Nearly 71% of US apparel imports, in terms of value of imports, came from Asia in 2023 and around 22% came from China alone. The other major sources include Vietnam, Bangladesh and India. In this Viewpoint, we look at how US imports of apparel have evolved over the years, how the tariffs under Section 301 impacted the market and what any additional tariffs might do.
