EAM/Domtar develops a resilient and absorbent patient-support pad

CLOVERDALE, CA, April 3, 2020-

In this patent application by EAM Corporation and Domtar Paper Company, LLC multi-layer absorbent laminates are disclosed with performance advantages for applications such as disposable patient-support pads. The laminates exhibit a combination of softness and resiliency or compressive rebound over multiple cycles in both the dry and wet states. These properties may be optimized for uses such as patient-support pads to reduce the occurrence of pressure ulcers and bed sores. Central to the development is the discovery that pad resiliency is related to combinations of SAP gel strength properties, SAP basis weight per laminate layer and SAP particle size distribution within stabilized SAP particle and adhesive porous matrices. The porous matrices are attached on each side of a wettable, regenerated cellulose spunlace nonwoven and further sandwiched between TAD tissue facings.

The technology may be applied in components of a variety of disposable absorbent products including patient-support pads, adult protective underwear and bed pads. Forty-four claims of the patent application address the inventive absorbent laminates, laminate production method, absorbent cores, disposable patient-support products and other absorbent articles containing the laminates.
