Battle over flushability claims continues in media, courtroom – and on shelves of stores

CLOVERDALE, CA, June 6, 2019-

As wipes industry participants prepare to gather late this month at the World of Wipes conference, conflict among wipes producers, the wastewater industry and some consumers questioning flushability claims continues unabated, with the dispute mainly focused on public relations and legal battles.

In April, Nonwovens Markets reported that Procter & Gamble reached a settlement in US federal court in a class-action lawsuit involving flushability claims related to its Charmin Freshmates Flushable Wipes. Significantly, plaintiffs and P&G agreed that its sales of the product in future will be bound by Guidance Document 4 (GD4) flushability verification procedures adopted in 2018 by INDA and EDANA.
