Nippon Shokubai is boosting its superabsorbent polymer capacity; market likely to loosen before it can get tight

CLOVERDALE, CA, October 30, 2014-

Nippon Shokubai will install a new train to make superabsorbent polymer (SAP) at its Himeji, Japan plant, the company announced early this month. The company also said that it is "planning further large scale expansions in Belgium or other regions", without specifying a place or time-frame.

The Osaka-based company estimated that global demand for SAP has been increasing at an annual rate of 6% to 7%. As a result, it decided to install a new unit to produce 50,000 tonnes/year of SAP at Himeji. This will push the company's capacity up to 610,000 tonnes, from 560,000 tonnes presently. Mechanical completion of the project is estimated for the end of June 2016.
